Juicy Steaks ranging from large to extra, extra-large.

Whether a guest pulled his own pint of beer in the 1920s, ordered the classical "Herrengedeck"
(Kölsch and corn schnapps) as a lunchtime drink in the 1950s or ends off a sunny summer's day in the beer garden today,
he has always felt at ease.

The man who has always strived to produce this air of tranquility for his guests at the
Ruppichteroth-Winterscheid "Zur Post“ public house
is Peter Halber.
He has worked here for more than 80 years and has not once considered retiring.

"This christian name is part of the family's tradition grins "Halber the Third“thus solving the riddle.
"My grandfather was called Peter, as was my father and I, too, am called Peter “

The Halber family has been running the
"Post" since 1919.
The grandfather, a farmer, took over the old post station in order to get some extra money, something fairly common at that time. The "current Peter“ started off as assistant to his father in 1973; he and his wife Marion have been running the "Post" for the last 22 years. They are supported by Peter's mother, Margarete, whose nickname is "Meta".

It is due to her that the "Post" is what it is: "Nobody will ever make me leave here“, says the sprightly 82-year-old lady, "after all, the pub has been my home for more than 52 years".
A lot of work has been done here in the last few years
in particular. An extension of the hotel in 1980 was followed by the purchase of an adjacent timber-framed house in 1989, which was redesigned into a13-bed-hotel.

Halber:
"It is mainly businessmen at the Cologne Trade Fair" who enjoy staying here on the countryside. The heart of the "Post" is the rustical public room with a restaurant known for its hearty, good, old-fashioned food.
Yet, whenever the weather allows it in the summer, most things take place behind the main house in
„Peter's Beer Garden “, as hardly anyone can resist
the attraction of the eating outside. Although there may only be a few wooden tables and a couple of flower tubs, Peter Halber's garden really deserves the name "Beer Garden".
With much love, he has created a green oasis that is always immaculately tended: surrounded by hedges, time-framed walls and undressed stonewalls.
The eye-catcher is a splendid plane tree, whose leaves
provide shade even when the sun is scorching.
Under this tree, in the cosy niches at the edge of the garden, or at the outdoors bar the guest encounters the best conditions to enjoy a cool lager.

At the counter you will find Warsteiner Pils and
Zunft-Kölsch (0.3 Litre for 1.95 Euro) as well as
Prinz Luitpolder Hefeweizen (0.5 Litre for 2.85 Euro).

Hungry garden guests may choose from the large, seasonally-adapted restaurant menu. We tried the substantial onion
roast with chips and salad as well as the soured boiled rump with a delicious horseradish sauce, salted potatoes and salad and were well served for 10 Euro each.

Peter Halber's most distinctive speciality, however, among his crunchy-fresh salads are the juicy rump steaks from young Argentinian bulls. Those who love meat can order them in large, extra-large and extra, extra-large
(250g, 400g and 500g!) for a reasonable favourable
11.50, 12.80 and 14.30 Euros respectively. Herbal butter, ayvar as well as baguette are all-inclusive; diverse side dishes and sauces are served at an extra charge.

"The offer has been calculated down to the last Euro (?)“, says Peter Halber, „yet I myself am a great steak fan.“ However, a certain kind of clever guest should be warned: Anyone coming with others who chooses a single extra, extra-large
one-pound steak but who requests two or three places with additional cutlery, will be disappointed. "Each steak is made
for one person" is the motto to be heard in the

hotel and restaurant

History

Picturesque and conveniently located, Winterscheid lies near Ruppichteroth in the Rhine/Sieg region.

Winterscheid‘s coat of arms has four parts:
the antler
symbolises the richly-wooded forest around Winterscheid;
the lion
is probably taken from the coat of arms of
Heinrich of Winterscheid (1370);
the oblique harrow lattice
stands for agriculture and cattle raising which were
previously the main source of Winterscheid’s income.
the grapes
refer to the local wine-growing activities which
were also extensive.

Winterscheid looks back on a rich history.
Excavations show that the very first settlements on the
town’s territory date back to c. 4,000 BC.
Larger communities ofrural inhabitants are noted in the Karolingian period of the 9th century.

It is most likely that the first village developed from the Rennenburg, a castle of refuge
in the early Middle Ages, enclosed by fortifications which protected the
surrounding population in times of danger. The first written mention of Winterscheid was made in 1131 AD.

Over the centuries the size of Winterscheid’s population
has been in constant fluctuation. In 1843 Winterscheid
already numbered 1,640 inhabitants. This number fell due
to a departing workforce caused by food shortages in subsequent years,
until in 1942 there were only 897 inhabitants. Winterscheid was spared much war damage
and the population increased in the postwar period to
2,364 inhabitants in 1979.
This number has not changed much since.

Winterscheid is today more live – than worker municipality, indeed now only a few farms deal
in both crops and livestock.
Right up into the post-war period the “Broeltalbahn,”

Germanys oldest public narrow-gauge railway,
was the most important means of transport. The horse
and cart dominated the town even into the 1950’s.
Finally in 1951 the faster and more economic bus
replaced the Broeltalbahn.
Today many who live here commute to their jobs in the neighbouring area. Even large cities like Cologne
and Bonn provide jobs for people living in Winterscheid, since they
are connected by excellent public transport systems and
the motorway. Various buses link Winterscheid with other suburban transport.

Although a comparatively small source of income,
local wine-growing goes back to the 9th century. It is documented that Winterscheid church owned two
vineyards in the Stachelhardt in 1768. But around 1907,
after the vineyards had moved into private hands, wine cultivation ceased to be a major activity for local people.
Despite this, modern street names in Winterscheid bear witness to the past, e.g. Im Wingert (“….”),
Am Südhang (“by the southern slope”).

Today Winterscheid is a popular destination for holidays
and daytrips because of its exceptional location and the inspiring local countryside. Winterscheid has twice won
the rural contest
„our village should become prettier“ ,
in 1973 and 1981.
